Hey, I’m Ryan!
I grew up in Calgary, joined the Canadian Army at 20, and a deployment to Bosnia sparked a passion for seeing the world. Since then I’ve explored dozens of countries and logged more than 120 scuba dives across some of the world’s best dive destinations.
From Calgary to the World
I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, where my love for the outdoors started early. Growing up so close to the Rocky Mountains meant hiking, skiing, camping, and weekend adventures were simply part of life.
Like many people, I always wondered what the rest of the world was like, but I never imagined just how much travel would shape my future.
The Trip That Changed Everything
At 20 years old, I joined the Canadian Army on a 3 year contract. After about a year I found myself deployed to Bosnia, and for the first time I experienced a country that was completely different from the modern city I grew up in.
The history, culture, landscapes, and people left a lasting impression on me. That experience sparked a curiosity to see more of the world, and after leaving the Army I packed a backpack and headed for Southeast Asia.
Over the next several months I travelled through Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. Looking back, I’m grateful I experienced many of these places before they became as busy as they are today.
One afternoon while walking along Khao San Road in Bangkok, I booked a scuba diving course on Koh Tao which was just an up and coming destination in 2005. I had no idea that simple decision would become one of the biggest turning points in my life.
From my very first dive, I was hooked.
Today I’ve logged more than 120 dives around the world, and scuba diving has become one of the biggest reasons I travel.
Why I Started The Global Travel Blog
Travel has given me some of the best experiences of my life, and I wanted a place to share them honestly. If a destination is amazing, I’ll tell you. If it’s overrated, I’ll tell you that too. My goal is simple. Help you spend less time planning and more time having unforgettable experiences.
